Waiting on the Conductor

Ready, set go!
The long awaited day is here! We purchased tickets in advance and we’re heading out soon!
We patiently waited in line while eating sweet kettle popcorn and talking about the anticipated journey.
Got our tickets in hand. Waiting for the Conductor to call.  Which train are we boarding?
Our wait before departure was about 40 minutes, but passed quickly.  A day with Thomas.

I am reminded of another Thomas, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus.  Thomas (called the Twin) you could say “missed the train” and wasn’t present when Jesus appeared after his resurrection to the other disciples. A man who once he saw the physical evidence of the risen Lord he believed and was overjoyed!  (John 20:24-29)

April 18/19, 2020 - Shemini (The Eighth)
- Parashah #26 Scripture Readings
Torah Leviticus 9:1-11:47 Haftarahs 2 Samuel 6:1-7:17

Shemini means eighth. While the number 7 represents completion
(such as God’s creation of the universe),
the number 8 often represents new beginnings.

After the 8th Day of Unleavened Bread - Thomas' encounter with the risen Lord!
John 20:24-29
Jesus Appears to Thomas
…26 Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!"

This article was originally written in July.  The month of Av (Ab) 1 (July/August Gregorian calendar)
 – A month of ripening grapes, figs & olives

9th of Av (Tisha B'Av) commemorates another event of 12 – the spies of Israel who were sent to Canaan to report back a “sneak peek” from the Promised Land. Yet even with physical proof in hand they became fearful and doubted God’s plan. (Numbers 13)

15th of Av (Tu B'Av) is a day of rejoicing for Israel (like our 15th day).  After 40 years of waiting, Joshua, Caleb and the younger Israelites entered the Promise Land – their “train arrived”!  Their trusting faithfulness was rewarded (they received their ticket). (Numbers 14)

So many thoughts and connections on a day of train fun!  The process of the purchase, receiving tickets, waiting for the day and the time to board.  The Bible gives us examples that can relate to our times today. Dates and events to remember, remind us to be patient, trust and wait for the prize.

But if we hope for what we do not see,
we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
Romans 8:25

We have our BOARDING PASS!!!

And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth

—the gospel of your salvation—
you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
who is the pledge of our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God’s possession,
to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14
