The gold coin hoard is on a par with the Byzantine Church, possibly the Church of St. Peter, that was recently discovered. The finds include the remains of a mosaic floor and a stone engraved with many crosses, indicating that Banias became a Christian pilgrim site. 
Ancient Banias, the city which stood where the treasure was discovered, was first built by the Canaanites and prospered during the Early Roman period, during the years of Herod the Great. The city is believed in Christian tradition to be the site of Peter the Apostle's recognition of Jesus as the Messiah.

An investigation is underway after a petrol station explosion in the Republic of Ireland. Ten people are confirmed to have died in the blast. Two teenagers and a child were among those killed in County Donegal, police have said. The incident took place in the small village of Creeslough, a community of around 400 people which is said to have been hit with "a tsunami of grief". Eight people have also been taken to hospital following the explosion.
