Protecting Humanity’s Fragile Heritage
From
17th to 20th June 2019 in Bern, the Swiss Commission for UNECO will celebrate
its 70th anniversary. This anniversary corresponds to the accession of
Switzerland to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) in 1949. Five thematic conferences will be held in a
marquee erected especially for this occasion on the Waisenhausplatz in Bern. In
conjunction with this event, a large-scale replica of the Triumphal Arch of
Palmyra, Syria, made by the Institute for Digital Archaeology (Oxford) will be
unveiled on June 13th on Bern’s Casio Platz.
Part
of a UNESCO World Heritage property, just like the Clock Tower of the Old City
of Bern, this monument — which today lies in ruins — symbolises the fragility
of our humanity. The city of Berne, a signatory of the Geneva Declaration for
cities united in solidarity for the protection of human rights and cultural
heritage, is giving its full support to the organisation of this jubilee.

The jubilee was
celebrated today in Bern: on the [Waisenhausplatz] a replica of the monumental
arch of Palmyra, destroyed in 2015 by the self-styled Islamic State, was
presented to the public
The official ceremony
for the 70th will be held on June 17th, in the presence of Federal Councilor
Ignazio Cassis, among others. Between 18 and 20 June, five conferences will be
held in a specially mounted tent at the Waisenhausplatz, to which you must
register.

Bern's Clock Tower – Zytglogge
The Zytglogge is
the landmark medieval clock tower in
the Old City of Bern. It has existed since about 1218–1220 and is one of the most recognisable symbols of
Bern. The name Zyglogge is Bernese German and
translates as Zeitglocke in Standard German or time
bell in English. A "time bell" was one of the earliest
public timekeeping devices, consisting of a clockwork connected to a hammer that rang
a small bell at every full hour. The Zytglogge clock is one of the
three oldest clocks in Switzerland.

Welcome to Bern! The greetings above represent the four official
languages of Switzerland: German (or more precisely the Alemannic dialects
spoken in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland), French, Italian and
Rhaeto-Romanic. As reflected in its languages, Switzerland is a diverse and
multicultural country which is divided into 26 largely independent cantons. The
canton of Bern with its main city and the de facto Swiss capital is located on
the Swiss Plateau in close proximity to the Alps.
We are pleased to welcome you in Bern where the 25th Annual Meeting of
the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) will take place from September
4-7, 2019. The event will be organised by the Institute of Archaeological
Sciences at the University of Bern which offers the facilities and support for
the meeting.
Bern is located in the heart of Switzerland which makes it easily
reachable from all major European cities, either by public or private
transportation. In the past, Bern has gained a lot of experience in hosting
international congresses and events and is therefore well prepared for the demands
of the venue.

Metropolitan Museum’s “The World Between Empires” will feature around 190
antique sculptures, murals, pieces of jewelry and other objects from the Middle
East from Monday to June 23.
On the
one hand, the exhibition deals with culture, religion and trade in antiquity,
but on the other it also raises “complex questions about the preservation of
cultural heritage,” says museum director Max Hollein.
The New
York Metropolitan Museum at Central Park in Manhattan is one of the most
renowned and most visited museums in the world.

On August 30, a few hundred Syrians attend a concert in Palmyra, organized by the government to celebrate the “many victories of the Syrian army.”
The modern town of Tadmor that lies adjacent to Palmyra is nearly empty; only a few dozen refugee families have returned.
Twice Palmyra fell into the hands of the Islamic State group, and twice the Syrian regime recaptured it with the help of the Russian army.
It became one of the most famous symbols of the alliance between Moscow and Damascus. Syrian and Russian authorities declared that they would restore Palmyra to its glory, while parks and nuclear missiles in Russia were named after the fabled city.

To rebuild or not to rebuild?
... the head of the Chechen Republic in Russia, donated $14m. for the restoration of the Great Mosque of Aleppo. The Syrian government has supposedly budgeted funding to restore the Lion of Al-Lat (it is currently on exhibit in Damascus). In Palmyra, foreign activists are teaching residents who returned the art of masonry, so that they will be able to take part in reconstruction.
“The famous Temple of Bel can’t be restored; there is nothing left of it,” said Prof. Azm. “And the Arch of Triumph – you will be restoring a restoration since the damaged part already had been restored. The question of ethics should be addressed. Many historians will tell you that restoration is not an appropriate approach today. It’s wise to stabilize what is left and then to decide what to do next. Recreating ancient temples that were shattered to dust has less to do with restoration and more to do with propaganda.”
Museums in the United Kingdom, France and Germany have also shown interest in the restoration of Palmyra and other heritage sites in Syria. During the 20th century, these countries dominated the excavation and research of Syrian antiquities. Some Italian and French teams are already working in Palmyra, assessing the damage and teaching locals to carve stone.
In 2016, Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph was recreated in London by the Institute for Digital Archaeology, in a joint venture with Harvard University, Oxford University and Dubai’s Museum of the Future. The replica, however, was slammed by critics as inaccurate and many archaeologists accused the creators of “building a Disney fabrication.”

The Peace Window, more than 20 feet in diameter and housed in a wooden frame made by Azeri craftspeople using traditional techniques, will celebrate an artistic tradition that has been at the heart of eastern and western spiritual and social life for more than 1000 years. The geometric patterns of traditional Azeri stained glass at Sheki shares much in common with similar artworks in Notre Dame, St Patrick's and the Sistine Chapel. The dazzling patterns of colored light have appealed to all faiths and peoples throughout time.
But glass is also fragile. It easily falls victim to fire, vandalism and the slow erosion of time. It is the perfect symbol for the fragility of built heritage – its beauty is derived in part from its ephemerality.
The fragments of glass that make up the Peace Window will be sourced from countries around the world, all remnants of structures that have been destroyed by natural or human forces – sites such as Notre Dame Cathedral, Baalbek, Herculaneum, World War II era London, flood ravaged sections of New Orleans, and Aleppo, Syria. Collectively, they will embody the intangible heritage of our planet, the shared history of our humanity.
