A tale of two arches from Palmyra, Syria:
Triumphal Arch and Tetraphylon

Simultaneous exhibits of two Palmyra arch replicas:
  • -       Triumphal Arch displayed at The National Mall, Washington District of Columbia
  • -       The Tetrapylon presented at Exhibit Columbus National Symposium, Columbus, Indiana

In my previous two blogs I have shared historical information on Palmyra, Syria.  This ancient city on an important trade route of the Fertile Crescent was known as the “Bride of the Desert.” The Greek name for the city, Palmyra is a translation of its original Aramaic name, Tadmor, which means 'palm tree'.  Tadmor is mentioned in the Bible (2 Chronicles 8:4) as a desert city that was fortified by King Solomon.
An oasis in the Syrian Desert, north-east of Damascus, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. From the 1st to the 2nd century, the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married Greco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.
Arch of Triumph of Palmyra, Syria

One of the most recognizable structures in the ancient city of Palmyra (تدمر) is the remarkable monumental arch (قوس النصر). Also known as the triumphal arch or victory arch, it was constructed during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193 to 211.

The arch is particularly impressive from an architectural standpoint, addressing a problem somewhat unique to Palmyra (تدمر). The layout of this ancient city was unusual for the Roman period, as its main streets did not align with the four cardinal points of the compass. The monumental arch (قوس النصر) was constructed at the point of a thirty-degree turn in the main colonnade between the tetrapylon (التترابيل) and the Temple of Bel (معبد بل‎). To solve this problem, the arch incorporated two façades angled apart from one another. Only one of the original arched façades survive, but the overall design is still easy to appreciate. The arch is richly decorated with stone carvings, one of the most lavishly adorned monuments in the city.

Sept 26-30 - Triumphal Arch on the National Mall in Washington DC

Please join us on the National Mall (at 6th St., between the National Gallery of Art and the Air & Space Museum) next Wednesday, September 26th, at 2:30PM when House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY) will jointly unveil the Institute for Digital Archaeology’s* reconstruction of Palmyra’s iconic Triumphal Arch.
The reconstructed arch, created using state-of-the-art 3D scanning, printing and carving technology, has previously been displayed at New York’s City Hall Plaza, London’s Trafalgar Square, the G7 Summit in Florence and Dubai’s World Government Summit.  The original arch was infamously destroyed by Islamic State Extremists in August, 2015.  The IDA’s reconstructed arch, carved from the same marble as the original, has become an international symbol of resistance to extremist groups who seek to obliterate world history and heritage in favor of their own social, religious and cultural narratives.  Previous installations of the arch have attracted more than 5 million visitors and it has been the subject matter of numerous books, stories and documentaries.

Sept 26-29 –Palmyra’s Tetrapylon Exhibition in Columbus, Indiana

Coinciding with the Arch of Triumph going up in Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) in the last few days of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) and the blackening of the St. Louis gateway arch, there is another gateway called a Palmyras Tetrapylon going up in Columbus, Indiana through the 26th – 29th of September. Columbus, Indiana has been called mid-century modern architectures “Mecca” and this will be its 6th international stop.
#NEWPALMYRA will announce the next phase in its evolution to a global audience of architectural enthusiasts at the Exhibit Columbus National Symposium on September 26–29. In this groundbreaking center of Modernist Architecture, Director Barry Threw will give the state of the Project and present the The Tetrapylon, our one-of-a-kind 3D print of Palmyrene cultural heritage, making its sixth stop along its international tour.

Three Arches:  St. Louis - D.C. – Columbus
It is noteworthy that this arch event is happening at the same time: The St. Louis Arch goes dark on Monday, September 17, and should resume its normal illumination on October 1. At that point, the lights go on at 7 p.m. nightly. (And, for the record, those are new-and-improved lights: 44 outdated fixtures were recently replaced with 26 new-fangled ones, which better focus light on the Arch's legs and also increase energy efficiency.)
Gateway Arch’s exterior lights will be turned off for the last two weeks of September

Arch of Triumph of Palmyra, Syria

The emperor behind the Palmyra Arch

Born on 11 April 145 at Leptis Magna (in present-day Libya) as the son of Publius Septimius Geta and Fulvia Pia,[1] Septimius Severus came from a wealthy and distinguished family of equestrian rank. He had Italian Roman ancestry on his mother's side and descended from Punic – and perhaps also Libyan – forebears on his father's side.[5]

Leptis Magna (also LepcisBerberLubtaNeo-Puniclpqy) was a prominent city in Roman Libya. Originally a 7th century BC Phoenician foundation, it was greatly expanded under emperor Septimius Severus (r. 193–211), who was a native of the city.
The ruins of Leptis Magna are located in Khoms, Libya, 130 km (81 mi) east of Tripoli, on the coast where the Wadi Lebda meets the sea. The site is one of best preserved Roman ruins in the Mediterranean.

Severus was also distinguished for his buildings. Apart from the triumphal arch in the Roman Forum carrying his full name, he also built the Septizodium in Rome. He enriched his native city of Leptis Magna, including commissioning a triumphal arch on the occasion of his visit of 203. The greater part of the Flavian Palace overlooking the Circus Maximus was undertaken in his reign

In the late 180s, Julia married the Libyan Roman general Septimius Severus
She was born in Emesa in the Roman province of Syria, into a family of priests of the deity Elagabalus.
Julia Domna was born in Emesa (modern day Homs) in Syria around 160 AD[1] to a family of Arab descent.
Her name, Domna, is an archaic Arabic word that means black. She was the youngest daughter of the high-priest of Ba'al, Gaius Julius Bassianus and sister to Julia Maesa. Through her sister and Maesa's husband Julius Avitus, Julia Domna had two nieces: Julia Soaemias and Julia Mamaea, the respective mothers of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, two future Roman emperors.[8]
Julia's ancestors were Priest Kings of the famous temple of Elagabalus. The family had enormous wealth and was promoted to Roman senatorial aristocracy. Before her marriage, Julia inherited the estate of her paternal great-uncle Julius Agrippa, a former leading Centurion.[8]
The marriage proved happy, and Severus cherished Julia and her political opinions, since she was very well-read and a student of philosophy. They had two sons, Caracalla (Lucius Septimius Bassianus) in 188 and Geta (Publius Septimius Geta) in 189.[9]

When Severus died in 211 in Eboracum (York), Julia became the mediator between their two sons, Caracalla and Geta, who were to rule as joint emperors, according to their father's wishes expressed in his will. The two young men were never fond of each other and quarrelled frequently. Geta was murdered by Caracalla's soldiers in the same year

Empress Julia Domna, who was herself from the province of Syriadecided to popularize him and his teachings in Rome.
Apollonius was born into a respected and wealthy Greek family.[2][3] Although the precise dates of his birth and death are uncertain, most scholars agree that he was a contemporary of Jesus of Nazareth. His primary biographer, Philostratus the Elder (circa 170 – c. 247), places him circa 3 BC – c. 97 AD.[1][4]
For that purpose, so these same scholars believe, she commissioned Philostratus to write the biography, in which Apollonius is exalted as a fearless sage with supernatural powers, even greater than Pythagoras. This view of Julia Domna's role in the making of the Apollonius legend gets some support from the fact that her son Caracalla worshipped him,[12] and her grandnephew emperor Severus Alexander may have done so as well.[13]
Apollonius was also a known figure in the Islamic world.[14]

During the last three years of his life, Severus lived in the town of York (in the Roman province of Britannia). The town, then called Eboracum, served as a good base for an Emperor to push back Caledonians (from Scotland) who were attacking Rome's interests in northern Britannia. As a result, York (during those years) became one of the most important cities in the world.

After serving nearly eighteen years as Rome’s emperor, Severus died (in Britannia, today’s England) during 211 AD. His body was burned on a pyre, in York.
This image, of a wooden tondo, depicts the imperial family and is currently maintained at the Altes Museum (in Berlin). We see Septimius Severus and his wife Julia Domna (who died in 217, six years after her husband), their son Caracalla (who became Rome’s Emperor in 211) and their son Geta (whose image was erased after Caracalla had his brother killed).

LoveWins: Marriage Equality in the United States

President Obama FULL Speech: Same Sex marriage ruling is 'a victory for America'
Obama: 'A big step in our march toward equality' - WASHINGTON — President Obama 's first reaction to the Supreme Court decision requiring states to recognize same-sex marriage came, of course, in a tweet. President Barack Obama declared Friday that the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide is "a victory for America."From the White House Rose Garden, he said that social progress sometimes is slow, "and then there are days like this, when that slow, steady effort is rewarded with justice that arrives like a thunderbolt."
"America should be very proud," he said.

In a 5-4 decision, the United States Supreme Court declares state bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional and effectively legalizes it across the United States.
·         Obergefell v. Hodges576 U.S. ___ (2015) The Fourteenth Amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex with all the accompanying rights and responsibilities and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state.
Decided on June 26, 2015, Obergefell overturned Baker and requires all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions.
While the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States, as of June 21, 2017, nine counties in Alabama and Texas still do not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
