Atonement – Covering

Atonement – Covering - Repentance – Return

Yom Kippur – Day of Atonement

He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,

and not only for ours but also

for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:2

And love consists in this: not that we loved God,

but that He loved us and sent His Son

as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:10

The “build up” to Yom Kippur / Day of Atonement begins at the start of the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. The first day of the seventh month is the Rosh Hashanah / Feast of Trumpets. The feast days as originally commanded are written in Leviticus 23. They all point to our Savior, Jesus Christ and were fulfilled through his obedient and sinless life and sacrificial death.

who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Shabbat Shuvah - The Shabbat that falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, or the Sabbath of return. If that word reminds you of the word teshuvah, that’s not a coincidence — they share a common root.
Teshuvah, or repentance, is a core concept of the High Holidays. The word literally means “return.” Services on Shabbat Shuvah are typically solemn and focused. And the Haftarah portion deals with themes of repentance and forgiveness.

The Golden Bell - City of David: Bringing the Bible to Life

When describing the special garments of the High Priest, the Bible describes that along the hem of his robes could be found golden bells.
"On its hem make pomegranates of blue, purple, and crimson yarns, all around the hem, with bells of gold between them all around: a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe." (Exodus 28: 33 - 34)
In 2011, archeologists excavating in the City of David - the place where Jerusalem began - announce the discovery of a 2,000 year-old, small golden bell, believed to be one of those that adorned the robe of the High Priest, who served in the Temple.

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory

and the exact representation of His nature,

upholding all things by His powerful word.

After He had provided purification for sins,

He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
