Dec 11/12 - Asteroid will pass in front of bright star Betelgeuse to produce a rare eclipse visible to millions
Betelgeuse, one of our brightest stars, will vanish from sight this week
This unusual occurrence, set to happen on Monday night, December 11, is due to an asteroid, 319 Leona, passing directly in front of the star, causing it to disappear for approximately 12 seconds.
The star is Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in the constellation Orion. The asteroid is Leona, a slowly rotating, oblong space rock in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Observers in Florida, parts of eastern Mexico, southern Europe, and northern Asia will be ideally positioned to witness this rare ‘occlusion.’ For those not in these regions, the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy will be streaming the event live from 8 PM Eastern on Monday. We have been waiting for years, now the time has come: on 12 Dec. 2023, asteroid (319) Leona will be between us and the star Betelgeuse, alpha Orionis, occulting it for a few seconds.

Cosmati Pavement - The great pavement in front of the High Altar of Westminster Abbey is a unique and remarkable object. The complexity and subtlety of the design and workmanship can be seen nowhere else on this scale.
It was laid down in 1268 by order of Henry III who had started re-building Edward the Confessor's Abbey in the new Gothic style in 1245. The workmen came from Rome, with a man called Odoricus at their head. The pavement belongs to a type of inlaid stone decoration known as Cosmati work, after one of the families of craftsmen who specialized in it and the technique is called opus sectile, 'cut work'.

King Charles will hold talks with Arab leaders this month to discuss a road map for peace in Gaza. He is hoping his close working and personal ties to Arab royals might boost diplomatic initiatives and is holding bilateral discussions, according to sources. It is understood the meetings will take place in Dubai ahead of the COP28 climate summit, beginning on November 30, where Charles will deliver an opening address on December 1.

Dec 17 - Members of the US Secret Service rush to a car after it hit a motorcade SUV as President Joe Biden was leaving his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday night. The crash caused a loud bang on the street, and Biden looked over to see the commotion. Dec 18 - The Pentagon announces new international mission to counter attacks on commercial vessels in Red Sea. The U.S. and a host of other nations are creating a new force to protect ships transiting the Red Sea
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin makes a joint statement with Israel Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, after their meeting about Israel's military operation in Gaza, in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The ten nation alliance includes: United States, United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain have joined the new maritime security mission, Austin said. Some of those countries will conduct joint patrols while others provide intelligence support in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Several other countries have also agreed to be involved in the operation but prefer not to be publicly named, a defense official said on the condition of anonymity to discuss additional details of the new mission that have not been publicly announced.
