Tu B'Shvat New Year for Trees

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up,
and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves
that summer is now nigh at hand.
 . . .
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted
worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass,
and to stand before the Son of man.

Luke 21:28-36

Shevat 15 - Tu B'Shevat - New Year for Trees

Significance: The "new year" for calculating the age of trees
Length: 1 day
Customs: eating fruit or the Seven Species; planting trees (or paying for planting them)

When you come to the land and you plant any tree, you shall treat its fruit as forbidden; for three years it will be forbidden and not eaten. In the fourth year, all of its fruit shall be sanctified to praise the L-RD. In the fifth year, you may eat its fruit. -Leviticus 19:23-25

"The New Year of the Trees" or Hebrew: ראש השנה לאילנות, Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot
Tu b'Shevat, the fifteenth of Shevat, is considered to be Rosh Hashanah for trees, regarding the requirement of tithing their produce.
Tu Bishvat day marks the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. Tu Bishvat distinguishes between the last year’s fruits and the fruits of a new year. Tu Bishvat or the “birthday” of all fruit trees, is a minor festival. The name is Hebrew for the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shevat.

(calendar does not rely on new moon sighting)
(month begins after sighting of new moon)

Jeremiah 1:11
HEB: וָאֹמַ֕ר מַקֵּ֥ל שָׁקֵ֖ד אֲנִ֥י רֹאֶֽה׃
I see a rod of an almond tree.

Prodigy of the Almond Tree

The lampstand (menorah): golden, budding and blossoming almond branches.
Aaron's Rod: a branch that budded, blossomed and ripened almonds.
Jeremiah's vision: a branch of an almond tree.

The Hebrew word for almond tree comes from a root word which means "to be alert, sleepless, to be watchful, to be on the lookout." So simple yet so profound is the parable of this "alert" and "watchful" tree. A branch that budded, blossomed and ripened almonds was chosen to represent the watchmen – Aaron and the House of Levi. Its budding and blossoming almond branches served as the pattern for the light in the holy place: a center branch producing the fruit of light with in-grafted branches also producing the fruit of light. An almond branch was used to communicate the message to Jeremiah that our Heavenly Father is watching over His Word to perform it. The attributes of the almond tree expounded proclaim the story of the Righteous Branch: watchful… first to resurrect… white garments… firstfruits… flesh withering in the heat… stricken… beaten… shaken… crushed but not destroyed… sweet, single, edible seed.

When the children of Israel were brought out of Egypt in the month Abib by a strong hand, they were led by a branch in Moses and Aaron's hand (a branch which later resurrected into a budding and blossoming almond branch), they encamped at a place called "Almonds" (Migdol) and they were brought to a mountain in Midian known as Jabal al Lawz or Mountain of Almonds.

Matthew 25:1, 13
At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Super Blue Blood Moon

The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever
shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered:
for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said,
and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
Joel 2:31-32

Super Blue Blood Moon – A rare occurrence in January 2018!

January had TWO Super Moons – January 1st and 31st
(hence the Blue Moon for the second).

There has been a lot published about this historic conjunction, especially with the previous blood moon series and with the January 31st Super Blue Blood Moon happening just before Tu B'Shvat (15th of Shivat) - New Year for Trees - Rosh Hashanah.

Although this big event has passed, I wanted to save/archive the information all together in this blog (didn’t have time previously).  I’m still gathering information and hope to add more at a later time.

This occurred over 150 years ago!  In late March 1866, there was a Blue Moon total lunar eclipse for North and South American time zones. But this full moon was not a supermoon.

Another odd coincident to this January 31 date is the death of Guy Fawkes on January 31, 1606 · Westminster, England. His story and gruesome events of his death are documented here:

Additionally, there will be two eclipses within a two week period
- January 31st and February 15
Both of these occur in the 11th Hebrew month

Hazelnut Trees / Helmet

But let us, who are of the day, be sober,
putting on the breastplate of faith and love;
and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

1 Thessalonians 5:8

Living in the land of abundant hazelnuts caused me to take notice of this odd report in the recent news. Just another weird world event of our unbridled society, yet this one piqued my curiosity…is there something more here?
Chaos spreads in France as Nutella-loving customers battle to get 70 percent off

The tasty chocolate spread, Nutella, is made from hazelnuts. It is one our family favorites. We have farm fields of what is locally referred to as “filberts.”  Area stores and farmer’s market feature the Oregon produce. Trees in general have been on my mind as Tu B'Shvat New Year for Trees is approaching, so I decided to look further into these trees and their nut “fruits.”

In 2014, world production of hazelnuts (in shells) was led by Turkey at 63% of the world total, followed by ItalyGeorgia, the United States, and Azerbaijan. In the United States, Oregon accounted for 99% of the nation's production in 2014.

The flowers are produced very early in spring before the leaves.

Hazelnut plant details:
Latin corylus, corulus hazel or filbert shrub.
Greek word korys which means "helmet" -
(a reference to the calyx which covers the nut).

In Casuarina, Juglans and the order Corylaceae, the pollen-tube does not enter by means of the micropyle, but passing down the ovary wall and through the placenta, enters at the chalazal end of the ovule.

The genus name • Corylus originates from the Greek word korys.
Greek word Korys (“hat” or “helmet”)
and it certainly applies to the helmet-like husks of the hazelnuts.

As I read the word “helmet” my mind was excitedly drawn to the word of God.
I won’t view the harvest of these nuts in the same way now.

Turkey is the world's largest producer of hazelnuts, but Oregon is the largest US grower.
Oregon Hazelnut Growers -
The name filbert probably derived from the German term vollbart (full beard) in reference to some hazelnut varieties in which the husk entirely covers the nut.
About 70% of the world’s hazelnut production comes from the Black Sea region of northern Turkey. Italy produces about 20% of world production. Spain, France, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and the United States produce most of the rest.

Building on the helmet study – the following video came out the same time I was discovering the helmet and hazelnut connection.  Many seek after God, but truth is found in the living word and by the spirit of God. Salvation is through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ alone.
